ATX Graffiti Art Show

SXSW Highlights

I plowed through SXSW seeing 20-something bands in 5 days. I figure the least I could do is share the highlights. The ultimate highlight of my week, by far, was a 2am house party in the woods where I caught a hot showcase of Hacienda featuring Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. No contest. That kind of thing just doesn’t happen every day, to me at least.

SXSW: Tips for the locals

Austin at night west

Its that time again! SXSW: when people from all over the world fill in the gaps in our already crowded streets. If you live in Austin, you know what its like to dodge slow moving out-of-towners at Whole Foods every time an event decides to call Austin its home.

ATX Emerge – Local Music and Media

March 14, 2009
10:00 amto11:59 pm

This is supposed to be a major networking event for creative industry professionals. Good luck to the event producers in keeping it from being overrun by non-industry hipsters. The Mohawk, 912 Red River. 03.14. 8pm – 2am. RSVP Here.

BELAIRE (listen/more info)

An indie pop band hailing from Austin TX, Belaire merges the progressive
attributes of Italian horror film scores with luscious synth swells and
bossa nova rhythms to create a playful dream-pop sound.

BRAZOS (listen/more info)

Songwriter Martin Crane has been creating music in our fair city for years.
Brazos is his collaboration with Andy Beaudoin and Paul Prince, and the
manifestation of his unique writing style in the form of a full band.

FRESHMILLIONS (listen/more info)

Drawing from modern experimental groups like Ratatat and the Octopus
Project, this group takes a tangle of cables, laptops, loopers and live
instruments and turns it into an parade of quasi-electronic jams.

FOOT PATROL (listen/more info)

Inextricably torn from the 80s electro scene and brought to this era for our
amusement, Foot Patrol blends danceable funk with an outrageous stage show.
Think the Bar-Kays with a foot fetish.

HARLEM (listen/more info)

A band with a level of buzz that seems to exponetially grow every day, Harlem has
captured the attention of Austin’s indie scene with their unfiltered
garage-rock sound.

SUNSET (listen/more info)

Bill Baird (formerly of Sound Team) has created a project with lasting
power. Each of their songs builds it’s own narrative, and their live shows
become more and more captivating with every performance.

UME (listen/more info)

Raw, unpredictable, rowdy. Ume brings a type of energy to the stage that is
a rare find in today’s environment, building on the sound pioneered by the
kindred spirits Siouxse and the Banshees and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

THE WHITE WHITE LIGHTS (listen/more info)

The haunting vocals and raw, introspective lyrics of Jenny Gacy collide
spectrally with Jonas Wilson’s masterful production and intoxicating swirls
of guitar build-ups to create hallucinations of staggering walls of sound
and noir love songs half whispered and half screamed at dissolving ghosts.
The White White Lights are sonic experimenters.

ZEALE (listen/more info)

Austin’s most respected rapper, Zeale will be coming back from an overseas
tour just before ATX Emerge. Already this year, he has performed with De La
Soul and KRS-1
